Intermodal connections

The intermodal facilities at the Port of Taranto are a strategic competitive asset and define its role as a port and logistics hub and bridge between the hinterland and global markets. The port boasts a comprehensive logistics offer where, in addition to its geographical location along the main trans-oceanic routes, its adequate seabed and the significant operational capacity of its quays, there is a complete intermodal system capable of connecting the Port of Taranto by sea, land and air.

The existence of an integrated logistics system, enhanced by appropriate infrastructure and services, makes the Port of Taranto the ideal hub to cover the entire logistics chain and act as a connection between the city, the surrounding area and international markets.

The infrastructural planning of the Port System Authority of the Ionian Sea (AdSPMI) aims to make the intermodal development of the port a permanent objective since, in addition to its geographical and dimensional features and characteristics, the aim is to constantly adapt and implement the network of connections to ensure that the port is always accessible, also as a gateway for international traffic serving the productive areas of southern Italy.

ICONA INTER STRADA

The Port of Taranto is located completely outside the city centre and has immediate access to the main roads thanks to its direct connection to the motorway network.

The A14 Taranto-Bari-Bologna Adriatic motorway is the airport's strategic link for long-distance transport, providing a rapid overland route to the markets of northern Italy and central Europe.

The closer catchment area - the Ionian arc and the Salento peninsula - is connected to Taranto by a network of national roads, including the SS7 (Taranto-Brindisi-Lecce) and the SS106, which links Taranto to Reggio Calabria via Basilicata.

On the railway, the port is connected to the Bari-Bologna Adriatic line and to the Potenza-Napoli, Brindisi-Lecce and Reggio Calabria lines: on the whole, the railway transport network is suited to the aim of achieving maximum speed and transferring an increasing share of freight traffic from road to rail.

The container terminal at the Port of Taranto has a direct rail link to the national network.

ICONA INTER AEREO

The Port of Taranto is 90 km and 75 km from the airports of Bari and Brindisi, respectively, from where flights depart and arrive daily to/from the main Italian and European airports. The Arlotta di Grottaglie airport is also about 20 km away. The airport is connected to the port by the Grottaglie - Brindisi road, which arrives directly at the northern gateway to the port. The Grottaglie airport could provide a development opportunity for an additional mode of cargo transport by means of cargo planes, as it has a 3.2 km runway.
